A good rule of thumb is to review and tweak your marketing plan annually. The beginning of each year, is a convenient and easy-to-remember time to implement a marketing review.
To start, you will want to look back on last year's marketing plan and decide what pieces worked for your business, and what didn't. Maybe that newspaper advertisement didn't quite get the "bang" you had anticipated and you would like to try something else this year.
Next, you should make a list of the important pieces of your marketing plan that are important and need to be kept. If many of your customers follow you on Facebook, that woud be one aspect of your previous marketing plan that would be important to keep going with.
Once you have done a thorough review of your previous marketing plan and have decided what is important for your business and what worked well last year, you should build on that for the New Year. Define a marketing strategy you want to implement, making sure to be very detailed in the "how" and the specific budget you are allocating to this plan.
Remember, a strong marketing plan will be multifaceted with specific strategies and their corresponding tactics outlined for all aspects of your business development. These areas include, but are not limited to; advertising, branding, events, social media and website development.
